Spliit is a free and open source alternative to Splitwise for shared expenses. Create a group, share it with the people in it, record who paid for what, and the app maintains a running balance of who owes whom.

The application is built with Next.js, styled with Tailwind CSS and shadcn/ui components, and reaches PostgreSQL through Prisma. It ships as a progressive web app, so it installs on a phone home screen without going near an app store.

Groups cover the cases that make splitting a bill awkward.

  • Uneven splits: an expense can be divided by share, percentage or exact amount instead of equally.
  • Reimbursements: settling up is recorded as its own expense, so the ledger stays honest.
  • Categories and search: every expense carries a category, and full text search covers the whole group.
  • Attachments: images upload to an S3 bucket and attach to the expense they document.
  • Receipt scanning: an optional vision model reads a photo of a receipt and fills in the expense form.

The AI features are opt-in and need an OpenAI key or a compatible provider, and image upload needs S3 credentials. Everything else works with nothing but a database. Deploy your own copy with Docker Compose, the published container image or a one-click Vercel clone, or use the hosted instance, which is funded by donations. Translations are contributed through Weblate.
