dbt-native data observability CLI that builds reports, surfaces anomalies and sends alerts for analytics engineering teams.

Elementary OSS is a command line tool for data observability that lives inside dbt rather than beside it. Tests and configuration stay in the dbt project, so there is no second system to maintain in order to know whether last night's models are trustworthy.

It works together with the Elementary dbt package, which collects metadata, artifacts and test results in the warehouse as dbt runs. The CLI connects to that warehouse, reads what the package gathered, and from it generates an observability report, surfaces anomalies and failed tests, sends alerts and tracks model and test performance over time.

The package brings several kinds of checks into an existing dbt workflow.

  • Anomaly detection tests: collect data quality metrics and flag outliers as native dbt tests.
  • Automated monitors: catch freshness, volume and schema issues without hand writing a test for each.
  • Lineage: trace models end to end, enriched with the latest results for impact and root cause work.
  • Dashboard: read every monitoring result and test outcome through one interface.
  • Catalog: browse datasets, descriptions, columns and dataset health.
  • Alerts: route to Slack or Microsoft Teams, with custom channels and owner tagging.

Because configuration is code in the dbt repository, observability travels the same review and deployment path as the models it watches. The open source project is Apache-2.0. Elementary also sells a cloud product with column level lineage from ingestion to BI, automated machine learning monitors and a built-in catalog, and the README is candid that the open source report is the basic version.
