OSMAnd

OsmAnd puts the worldwide OpenStreetMap database on a phone and keeps it there. Map data is stored on the device, so viewing, searching and turn-by-turn routing work with no internet connection at all, which also means no roaming charges when traveling abroad.

Routing covers car, bike and pedestrian travel using the device GPS, with recorded and synthesized voice guidance, optional lane guidance and street names, estimated arrival time, intermediate waypoints and automatic rerouting whenever you leave the route. Search finds places by address, by type such as restaurant, hotel or gas station, or by geographical coordinates.

Beyond navigation the app leans on the wider OpenStreetMap ecosystem.

• Offline vector maps: compact per-country or per-region downloads updated at least monthly, with a road-network-only option that cuts all of Japan from 700 MB to 200 MB.
• Overlays: satellite imagery from Bing, online or cached tile maps, and GPX tracks with adjustable transparency.
• Wikipedia points of interest: articles attached to places for sightseeing, available in the paid version.
• Safety aids: automatic day and night switching, speed limit reminders, speed-dependent zoom and location sharing.
• Editing back: report map bugs, add points of interest and upload GPX tracks to OpenStreetMap from inside the app.

Trip recording, contour lines and hill shading round out the outdoor features, the last through a paid plugin. Distribution covers Google Play, Huawei AppGallery, Amazon, F-Droid and the Apple App Store, and the free tier caps downloads at sixteen map files. Purchases of OsmAnd+ and Pro subscriptions fund development, while translations run through Weblate.
