PeerTube

PeerTube is a free, decentralized and federated video platform developed by Framasoft as an alternative to services such as YouTube, Dailymotion and Vimeo, which centralize both data and attention. Instead of one company holding every video, the network is made of many small hosting providers that interoperate, so creators avoid vendor lock-in and viewers get a community-owned platform with no ads.

Each instance publishes into the wider fediverse, so a video uploaded with a description and tags becomes discoverable well beyond its home server. Followers can subscribe from Mastodon, Pleroma or plain RSS, without needing an account on the instance where they watched.

The platform covers what both creators and administrators need day to day.

• Live streaming: start a broadcast from your usual client, and host permanent streams alongside uploaded video.
• Embeddable player: place a video hosted on your instance into any website you run.
• Peer to peer delivery: viewers share the load between themselves over WebRTC while they watch.
• Instance redundancy: friendly servers cache one another's videos, so a small instance can still reach a wide audience.
• Administrator control: colors, listings and the web client are all changeable, with no dark patterns and no recommendation engine.

Content creators can add a support button that links viewers to donation accounts, which is the project's answer to pay-per-view and advertising. Production installs are documented for most operating systems, community packages cover YunoHost and Docker, and separate references exist for the REST API and the ActivityPub layer.
