Kimai

Kimai tracks project time for anyone who bills by the hour, from a lone freelancer to a company with hundreds of users. It replaces the spreadsheet that quietly drifts away from what was actually worked, and turns recorded hours into invoices without a second tool.

The application is built on PHP with Symfony and Doctrine, with an interface on Bootstrap and Tabler, and it is designed to run on hardware you control.

The feature list reaches well past a stopwatch.

• Multiple timers: run several at once, or switch to a punch-in punch-out mode for shift-style work.
• Invoicing and budgets: money and time budgets, with rates set per user, customer or project.
• Reporting and exports: advanced search and filtering, data exports, and a JSON API for whatever the interface does not cover.
• Authentication: SAML, LDAP or database accounts, with two-factor authentication over TOTP.
• Teams and roles: customizable role and team permissions across multiple users, timezones and languages, with over thirty translations already written.

Running Kimai calls for PHP 8.2 or newer, MariaDB 10.6 or MySQL 8.4 at minimum, a web server on its own subdomain rather than a subdirectory, and the gd, intl, json, mbstring, pdo, tokenizer, xml, xsl and zip extensions. Documented installation paths include Docker images, Caddy with Docker Compose on Hetzner or DigitalOcean, plain SSH with Git and Composer, and Synology, with a plugin marketplace and a hosted version for teams that want either.
