Anki is a spaced repetition program. Reviewing every card on a fixed schedule wastes time on material you already know and reaches the hard cards too late. Anki reallocates that time, helping you spend more time on challenging material, and less on what you already know.

The schedule is driven by your own answer. After seeing a card you rate how well you recalled it, and Anki will schedule the next review for when you're most likely to forget the information. Cards are not limited to plain text, since they hold audio, images, videos and scientific markup, and both the layout of a card and the timing of its reviews can be changed.

Where Anki runs, and what it costs, varies by platform.

  • Desktop: the computer version covers Windows, macOS and Linux, and it is free.
  • AnkiWeb: a free synchronization service that keeps cards in step across devices.
  • AnkiMobile: the iOS app is paid, and the proceeds fund development.
  • AnkiDroid: the Android app is free and open source.
  • Add-ons: installable extensions that give the desktop program new features.
  • Shared decks: decks published by other people, ready to study.

This repository holds the source for the computer version. Development builds are published separately as Anki betas for anyone who wants to try changes without compiling, and the contribution and development guides sit in the repository's docs directory, with fuller developer documentation on its own site.
